Day Three - Blog Post by Megan Schrass
Day 3- by Megan Schrass
Today was the first day working at the school with the kids.
As we all were jumping into something new and asked to step out of our comfort
zones, the kids were also returning from a three-week break making the first
day very hectic. The kids were full of love, happiness, and hugs. To begin the
day, our team was split into two groups where one began with helping aid kids
in the classroom and the others helped prepare a classroom for the young kids.
After the classroom was prepared, the kids were patiently waiting for us to
come play with them. As each of us learned the games that the kids played, we
were also able to teach the kids some of the games we played as kids. We
realized that many of our hand games overlap with the ones that the kids taught
us. When the lunch bell rang after playing with the kids, we had a 30 minute
period to enjoy our lunch and get a break from the kids. Right now the school
is a couple teachers short and Veronica asked if a couple of us could teach
some classes to the kids. Grace, Ryan and I began teaching a history class
right after lunch. The kids were very well behaved but for us teaching we felt
very unprepared. However, in the end we were able to make everything work and
the kids seemed to love having us as their teacher for the day. This was the last
class period for the kids before they had time to do their homework and it was
time for us to play yet again. After one day with the kids, its easily noticeable
that certain kids will attach themselves to the “teachers”, the name that every
kid calls everyone on the team. All the kids want is attention from us and they
want to show us more about what they enjoy doing. One thing that the kids love doing
is playing with the long hair of the girls, as most of the time you would find
more the one kids playing with one person’s hair. Although the only thing the
kids wanted was to play and take pictures, they were very well behaved as we
taught our lesson for the day. Finally when it was time to leave, no one wanted
us to leave and the kids said their goodbyes with huge hugs and smiles. After
returning home and having a nice cooked meal, we debriefed and talked about the
day and prepared for tomorrow.
Great work, all of you! Your blog most exemplifies the love of Christ that surpasses any language or cultural barrier!
